Faceting, Altering, and Surface Development on the Wheel

$135.00

Thurs, June 18th @ 5- 8 pm

In this focused workshop, Dwayne Sackey will demonstrate and teach his approach to fasting and altering wheel-thrown forms as a way to introduce movement, asymmetry, and surface tension into functional pottery.

The workshop will begin with a demonstration covering form development on the wheel, timing and decision-making around when to fast and alter, and how these techniques influence both structure and surface. Dwayne will also discuss how he thinks about proportion, rhythm, and gesture, and how these ideas carry through trimming and glazing.

Participants will then have guided hands-on time to explore these techniques on their own work. Emphasis will be placed on developing sensitivity to clay at different stages, using simple tools effectively, and making intentional choices rather than overworking forms.

This workshop is well-suited for intermediate to advanced potters, though motivated beginners with solid centering skills are welcome.

What Will Be Covered:

    •    Throwing forms specifically intended for fasting and altering

    •    Timing: when and how to alter without compromising structure

    •    Creating movement and gesture on the wheel

    •    Tool use and hand techniques for controlled alteration

    •    How altered forms affect trimming and surface development

    •    Q&A throughout the session

Materials:

Clay and basic tools provided by Santa Cruz Ceramics. Participants are welcome to bring preferred tools.
