Interested in learning a new firing technique that’s fast, experimental, and a little unpredictable? Embark on a magical side quest with a rowdy raku firing experience! Raku uses heat, smoke, fire, and combustible materials to create dramatic and often unexpected surface effects. No two pieces come out quite the same!

Bring 3–5 pieces of bisqueware—we’ll provide the glazes. You’re also encouraged to bring dry materials, feathers, horsehair, or other weird stuff you’d like to experiment with for decorating.

What to Expect

Raku is a fast, low-fire process. We’ll heat your work to roughly 1850°F, which takes about an hour, then safely pull the red-hot pots from the kiln with tongs. From there, we’ll experiment! Pieces can be placed in a chamber of combustible materials for classic raku effects, or decorated with feathers, hair, and other dry materials to create unusual surfaces and patterns.

Raku is experimental! Unpredictable! A little chaotic! Open up the kiln and extract your wares from the belly of the dragon beast! About 10 minutes later, your pieces can be submerged in water, handled with bare hands, and taken home that day.

What to Bring:

3–5 pieces of bisqueware, dry materials/feathers/etc. to experiment with, and snacks and bevs!
